The Recreation & Leisure Sector has been very successful in identifying, advocating, promoting and supporting health policy initiatives within recreation facilities and service clubs in Windsor-Essex County. The Recreation & Leisure Sector worked extremely hard to impact change and have a positive influence on the health of Windsor-Essex Community.

Below is a big success the Recreation & Leisure Sector achieved to date.

Adoption of a Smoke-Free Outdoor Sports and Recreation By-Law

The Town of LaSalle is the first municipality in Windsor and Essex County to adopt an outdoor smoke free policy. The Town of LaSalle Culture and Recreation Department volunteered to pilot this initiative in LaSalle and to share the expertise and experience with the other municipalities. Council approved a no smoking by-law at Vollmer sports fields and restraining smoking 9 meters away from any entrance way to the complex. The resolution reads: Council at its meeting held April 27, 2010 passed the following resolution: “That Council APPROVE Phase 1 of the Designated Smoking Areas at the Vollmer Culture and Recreation Complex, including the installation of “no smoking signs” around the perimeter of the soccer fields with adjustments to signs regarding limitations and areas.”

The Recreation & Leisure Sector has successfully developed a generic tobacco free policy package for Windsor-Essex that can be transferable across all municipalities by respective directors of recreation. This policy will look at creating tobacco free sports and recreation facilities across Windsor-Essex. The Town of LaSalle will be the first municipality to present and pending approval, it will be followed by the remaining municipalities.
