Education Sector Successes to DateThis is a picture of the signatories of the Healthy Schhols Declaration.

The Education Sector has been very successful in identifying, advocating, promoting and supporting health policy initiatives within educational facilities in Windsor-Essex County. The Education Sector worked extremely hard to impact change and have a positive influence on the health of students and their surrounding environments.

Below are just a couple of the successes the Education Sector has achieved to date.

Signing of the Healthy Schools Declaration

On September 30, 2010, Go For Health Windsor-Essex and the four district school boards outlined below formalized the commitment to develop and promote healthy school environments for children and youth:

DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARDS

  • Conseil scolaire de district du Centre-Sud-Ouest (CSDCSO)
  • Conseil scolaire de district des écoles catholiques du Sud-Ouest (CSDECSO)
  • Greater Essex County District School Board (GECDSB)
  • Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board (WECDSB)

This commitment was formalized with the signing of the Healthy Schools Declaration

The goals in signing the Healthy Schools Declaration are:

  1. To establish a partnership between the school boards to collectively advocate for and create healthy school environments in keeping with the mission set out by Go For Health Windsor-Essex (A Call to Action, 2007).
  2. To encourage and support communication between the school boards to develop and implement school board policies that address healthy eating and physical activity for children and youth in our area.
  3. To support greater student achievement by all school boards by working together to share best practices and successes in creating healthy school environments.

The Education Sector is proud of the monumental commitment all four school boards are dedicated to.

Development and Completion of the Healthy Schools and Healthy Students Survey

The Go For Health Education Sector Committee developed a survey about physical activity, nutrition, and tobacco/substance use in schools. These questions asked about the use of strategies, health resources, and community supports related to physical activity, nutrition, and tobacco/substance use in schools. This survey encompassed all four district school boards and highlighted the state of healthy policies within each respective school board.

The survey response was excellent which helped to illustrate an accurate picture of healthy policies within the schools. The survey paved the way for the development and signing of the Healthy Schools Declaration by Go For Health and the four school boards.
